Shyla Johnstone - Nurse Practitioner

Shyla’s passion for caring started young and she formally entered the healthcare industry in 2006. Since then she has continued to explore opportunities and grow in experience and knowledge around helping people. Her nursing experiences include work in neurosciences, rural medicine, long term care, home care, child and adolescent mental health, psychiatric emergency, adult mental health, addictions, women’s health, and primary care.

Shyla has a passion for the brain and getting to the root of people’s worries and concerns. She believes individuals deserve an understanding of their care options.

Currently Shyla provides mobile (in home or office) and virtual primary care to Albertans with Direct Health Solutions. She specializes in mental health care including ADHD assessments/care and trauma care.  She also supports those with new/limiting chronic illness, viewing health through the lens of a spectrum and reframing perspective to find value and purpose. Shyla is also licensed and able to provide virtual care for those in Ontario. 


Outside of nursing, Shyla spends her time outdoors, with her favourite people and animals, or working on various projects.

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are Registered Nurses who have additional education and nursing experience which enables them to address the needs of a person’s physical and mental health, create a roadmap for lifestyle changes to improve health and coach or support chronic illness management.

NPs are often consulted by other healthcare professionals and can assist with the following:

  • gather medical history

  • order and interpret tests

  • prescribe medications

  • diagnose and treat illnesses
